Science Projects - Year 5


 

 

Tasks

At first, we had been asked to create a half-termly project based upon our science topic (The Solar System). We were informed that we could pick a planet of our choice. Fortunately, there was a huge variety of formats, i.e. PowerPoints, Documents, Clips and Model work and more.

 

 

Independent and Group Work

Many children decided to work in groups, with partners or on their own. It's such a coincidence that some children wanted to work together because some of the projects that were presented were absolutely fabulous and definitely showed team work and good effort.


Presentations

It's very hard to present a project because it takes confidence. A mixture of feelings would race through you, for instance, feeling nervous or anxious. Applauses were excellent and very supportive. Lots of children did quizzes and had prizes to give (some space themed). Everyone was given a certificate to show their hard work and effort that was put into these incredible projects.

Since these are half-termly projects, we will get a new project for next time.

Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium


On the way to the science centre, thoughts were racing through my mind. A blanket of curiosity and anticipation covered me. We had finally arrived! As our guide appeared, my face lit up and a smile crept across my face. Our guide mentioned the instructions, then told us we could go. We were off! In the blink of an eye, I was rummaging through the bottom floor. My head was full to the brim with facts. I learnt about the animals that live under the sea and the impact they have on our lives, I learnt about the human body and what you can find when you mine for glimmering gold, iron and glistening gems. After we had ended our search through the bottom floor, we clambered up the steep stairs onto the top floor. My jaw dropped and my eyes widened. I couldn’t believe my eyes! The top floor was packed with various activities: sports games, idea boards and an area where you could deepen your knowledge of space. When we had finished looking around the top floor, the teachers rounded us up to have our lunch. I raced through my lunch as I was so excited to go to the planetarium.


 
 

Yet again, we climbed up the steep stairs to the planetarium. I quickly settled into my seat since I was so eager to learn more. During the show I learnt a multitude of facts. When the show had finished, we asked Mrs Barber (my teacher) to let me explore more and she reluctantly said yes. Unfortunately, it was time to go school. I tucked myself into my seat, put my seat belt across to the buckle and took a deep breath, my amazing day at Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium was over.

A Trip to the Ageas Bowl - Hampshire Cricket Club


 
 
My food turned a somersault in my stomach as we wriggled over a bump. Cautiously, we turned into a road and I spotted a massive building with the words Ageas Bowl. I felt a sudden pang. We were here! A smile crept across my face. In awe, we stepped out of the minibus gazing. Emily, who was our guide, lead us into a colourful room with glistening light bulbs flashing, pictures on walls along with facts and a huge television showing a trailer about the Ageas Bowl. My head was brimming with different questions to ask Emily. My hand shot up every time whilst a gap in my head was waiting to be filled with information. After ending our task, we quietly tip toed through the  cafĂ© and up the steep steps until we reached the court. Despite the fact that we had been before our jaws dropped at the size of the cricket pitch. My eyes burst. A hand tapped me on the shoulder telling me to keep up. Finally, we came to the net where we were going to play a mixture of activities in groups of four. After that, we swapped guides; instead we had an old cricket player who used to play on the ground. Although he could see that we were bursting to ask questions we couldn’t ask any because we wanted to get through the whole fun day without having to miss anything. I sighed mournfully. We separated into groups and were told to sit down on a rough mat running down to both edges of the tent whilst we politely listened to him explaining our task.

Of course this was learning. However, this was fun learning and we enjoyed it. Excitedly, we rushed round to each of the activities laughing and chatting.
We were having a great day and it was all about to finish with a thank you to Emily and Chris for their kindness. Bubbling with excitement, we walked back into the minibus heading back to school, overflowing with knowledge to fill our parents. We had had a wonderful fun learning day out of school and were extremely happy when we returned.
